What is the wind and wave height limit for using Bots?

The Bots are capable of holding position in big wind and waves. Over the years, we’ve honed our hull by studying its performance in varying conditions and have found a balance that performs well in all conditions.

MarkSetBots have been used successfully in winds exceeding 30 knots and waves measuring 3-4 meters. At the 2023 PanAm Games in Chile, Bots maintained position in waves consistently of 3-4 meters, with the largest recorded wave at 6 meters. And at the 2023 World Match Racing Tour Gold Cup in Bermuda, Bots held position in sustained 35-knot winds from Tropical Storm Philippe.

Wave frequency and steepness also plays a role as very steep waves (potentially breaking surf) could move the Bot more aggressively than long, rolling waves of the same height.  Current in the racing area may also impact wind and wave limits, depending on its direction.

In water without current, our general rule of thumb is that in any condition in which a Race Committee would send boats out on the water, you can expect your Bots to hold position.
